What if depression isn’t all in the mind?

British psychiatrist Edward Bullmore has just published a book titled ‘The Inflamed Mind’ which challenges the medical profession on its understanding of depression, the causes and treatment. The launch of the book and its contents was covered in a lengthy article in The Times Magazine by William Leith on 21st April.

Having uncovered a connection between inflammation in the body and depression in the mind as a junior physician 30 years ago, Dr Bullmore has undertaken extensive experiments and people studies to prove a correlation between an inflammatory response in the body (from illness, vaccination, stress) and a signs of depression.

The book explains how the body and mind cannot be easily separated and if research continues to prove his theory, that we may be on the cusp of a revolution in understanding and treating depression.
